Welcome to Shooting Orchids

A Day at the Gym

E-mail Print PDF

On a slightly overcast Saturday we, the Orchids, marched through the doors to the Lensbury Gym in Teddington and began to set up our event. After half an hour of getting organised, the bikes were in place, the banners up and what was left of the balloons (after a few bursting incidents) drifted aimlessly across the gym foyer.

At 8am sharp I jumped on the bike and started pedalling. A few minutes later, my first co-cyclist did the same. This was the start of 10 hours of cycling on the two bikes, which was to cover nearly 400 miles and raise just over £500. We were cycling for half an hour each, getting an average of about 9 miles done during that time.

What can I say? Marvellous, thats what.

I just want to say a massive thank you to the Lensbury Gym (Teddington) and the lovely people who gave us notes, coins, pledges and support throughout the day. You really made it a worthwhile day out for us and have helped us get that bit closer to our target. What a day.

After aiming for an average of 20mph, we managed a valiant 17.4mph, even after I had to leave early, forcing the other Orchids into a tighter half hour on, half hour off shift pattern which shows how well the other chaps were doing.

A special thanks to Adam for allowing us in, and to Nikki and the other staff for putting up with sweaty boys in their vicinity all day!

With exactly three weeks until we leave, this is an excellent boost having received so many kind words and encouraging sentiments. We hope everyone who saw us there enjoyed their meeting with the Orchids and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

Thanks a million guys!

The Final Month

E-mail Print PDF

As we move into the final month of preparation, we thought we should let all our readers know exactly what's been happening in the last month or so, and what's coming up in these last four weeks.

The training rides have been getting longer and longer, Greg and Nick emphasising this going for an 80 mile slog on Tuesday. Good news is that both of them were tired but not broken, saying they felt relatively fresh the next day. Bonus! Jonny has got a back to back century planned in the west country, Laurence has fallen in love with cycling within a matter of days, and everyone is getting on the bikes as much as possible.

We've also pretty much finalised everything to do with the trip....the ferries are booked, the route is settled, the hotels are ready for 10 sweaty and tired men, the support cars are sorted (thanks to those others who have offered to help on the journey, the more the merrier and im sure we'll need you!) and we've got two fundraisers coming up very shortly.

Breaking News

E-mail Print PDF

We have some news.

Unfortunately Matt Woolgar has had to pull out of the ride. A combination of factors, including the fact that he had his bike stolen very recently, meant it was almost impossible for him to continue, and is extremely upset he can't finish the journey he started 9 months ago.

It goes without saying that all the team is disappointed with the news but accept it was out of Matt's control. We thank him for all his efforts up to now.

The Shooting Orchid Look

E-mail Print PDF

After a lot of anticipation, the new Shooting Orchid cycling jerseys have arrived all the way from Germany!

The design was chosen by our fans in our design poll, and you can see how good they look on the boys modelling them below.

Thanks to Owayo Custom Cycling for fulfilling our order and our dreams with these superb jerseys. We are looking forward to many happy miles sporting these eye catching tops and if you see one (or some) of us around, dont be afraid to cheer, clap and/or wave as we go past.

Go Orchids!!
